Option 1: SCARS K4K Round-the-Island Participant - 8:00 AM Launch

What to Expect:

This is not a race.  This event is to raise money for the charity SCARS (Registered Charity #922).  We ask that each participant reach out to friends and family to support their effort by donating to SCARS.  We will provide you with flyers to send out to your list of contacts.  You need not worry about pledges, collecting money, etc. as you will be asking donors to transfer money directly to SCARS and identify you as a participant in the transfer details. We will have a media campaign to assist in generating donations for SCARS on your behalf.

Safety is paramount. Due to differences in equipment, physical abilities, etc., there will be large distances between participants.  This will create challenges for our support boats and communications with each of you.  Stay relaxed and look out for one another when at sea.

Each participant will be required to register and sign a release and waiver form and receive a brightly colored participant shirt to wear during the event (we want you to wear our shirt so we can easily identify you on the water)

Route (est. 40 miles):

We will launch from Somerset Long Bay Park beach at 8:00 AM sharp and finish at Clearwater beach on day one of the trip (equipment can be stored in a shed overnight). The K4K Committee will assess weather conditions and determine if the circumnavigation will be clockwise or counterclockwise a day before the event based on wind/weather conditions.

Depending on conditions, your equipment and fitness level, kayakers/SUPs can expect to finish around 3:00-4:00 pm in Clearwater.  Day 2 begins from Clearwater Beach at 8:00 AM sharp and ends at Somerset Long Bay Park; again, probably around 3:00-4:00; followed by a Bar-B-Q for participants and immediate family at The Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club beginning at 4:00.

What Assistance Will There Be?

There will be several support boats and jet skis to assist during the journey.  The boats will be carrying drinks and snacks.  Lunch will be provided at a rest point somewhere along the course for the participants.  Every few hours we will stop along the way to stretch out, have lunch, etc.

Recommended Equipment/Gear:

The majority of participants use sit-on-top kays.  In calm conditions, Stand Up Paddleboards have been used as well as Epics and other long and narrow surf skis.  Suggested equipment includes your personal (or borrowed) SUP or Kayak, Paddle, Comfortable Seat (please note that kayaks require registration with Marine & Ports.  Not sure about SUPs): There are various shapes and sizes.  A long (11-13 foot) and narrow kayak will be faster, easier to paddle and track in a straighter line than a short kayak but less stable in choppy surf. A shorter yak (9-10 foot) will be more stable in choppy surf but more difficult to paddle and tend to stray from a straight line track.

Over the past few years several corporate sponsors have organized relay teams using tandem kayaks.  For more information on forming a relay team contact Jerry Rivers at jerry.rivers@everenspecialty.bm or 505-8862.
